Mark, I think you are right on with the point on authenticity. It is really what you have taught, to step right into what you are feeling in a given moment and allow for the truth of that.

God, isn't it such a challenge for many of us to be able to simply accept where we are right then, although not with the intention of dwelling on it? The point is not about trying to change ourselves but to live in and build on the authentic moment.

Thanks for shining light on the truth of being ourselves. And if in the moment being authentic includes acknowledging some "disquiet", that, too, comes across as being genuine.

It's a good one- and I think that there are many people (myself included) who have spent a lot of energy and effort trying to create that sense of confidence inside.

And that's when it feels wierd, and forced.

Instead, when I'm graced with the awareness of it, if I can let myself feel however I'm feeling, I can generally come into a more authentic relationship not only with myself, but with the other person.

This is a subtle point- not from the confidence inside- but from the authentic connection. The authenticity is what builds the trust, and from that comes the confidence. That's my experience at least.

Yes, Dave, and isn't it nice when someone responds with their own authenticity and is clearly comfortable being themself with you? And that self-development/self-knowledge work seems to be a lifelong journey, wouldn't you say? I for one am definitely not a finished product. The journey is getting to be more and more fun, though!

Thanks, Dave.

You raise an important issue here, Stuart, that is not often explored - this being comfortable inside as the corner stone for being able to build trust. Boy we sure can smell out when someone is being inauthentic. There is something that does not match with their words. That goes right to the core. We are wired to pick up incongruence - just like you are trained to spot when something is not straight when its being built. That is an important endorsement for doing self development work.

Hi Karin,

Nice to see you here.

Thanks for the great story. You sure sound like you are in solid integrity, truly keeping the customers' best interests in mind.

Not the stereotypical "sales" approach. And in the long run it works!

Take care,

Stuart Baker

Hi Stuart

Funny you should write this post now. Had a customer in this Saturday who (at one point) accused me of 'lack' of sales skills after I refused to sell him cork tiles for a wetroom. This was said in jest, don't take me wrong, but it developed into a nice conversation about selling, trust and trust building. He said: where's the 'sales-person' in you? I answered: on long term planning ;-)
(If I'd sold him the cork for that area, he would have had problems and would never recommend us to anyone else, hence sales person has long term planning-vision in mind).
He also said he didn't like our Dutch honesty (we're original from The Netherlands, now living and working in the UK)

Customer came back today and not only ordered floor and installation work for 1 room, he decided it was better to have two rooms done ;-)
(See, long term planning in practise ;-) - plus 'remarklable'/funny story to tell for my next 60 seconds at BNI)
